Massive Power Outage Hits Europe, Affecting Millions
A massive blackout left millions without power across Spain, Portugal, and parts of France, disrupting transport, communications, and emergency services. Authorities suspect a high-voltage grid failure, with recovery taking hours. Hospitals relied on generators, while airports and metros faced delays. The cause—technical or cyber—remains unconfirmed, sparking debates on infrastructure vulnerabilities.
The blackout occurred around 12:30 PM local time (10:30 GMT), causing a sudden drop in energy consumption from 25,184 megawatts to 12,425 megawatts in Spain, according to Red Eléctrica de España (REE). The operator described the incident as “exceptional and extraordinary,” attributing it to a possible “zero electrical” event in the high-voltage grid—a safety disconnection triggered by severe faults. The exact cause remains under investigation.
In Spain, the outage affected nearly all mainland provinces, excluding the Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla, and the Balearic Islands. Major cities like Madrid and Barcelona faced severe disruptions, with traffic lights failing, metro services halted, and thousands trapped in elevators and trains. Barcelona Airport maintained operations using backup generators, while Madrid’s Barajas Airport experienced delays for about 30 minutes.
Portugal’s public transport systems were paralyzed, and mobile services suffered significant outages. E-Redes, Portugal’s grid operator, suggested the fault originated outside the country, likely linked to Spain’s high-voltage network. The Portuguese government established a task force to monitor the crisis. Southern France and Andorra also reported brief power cuts but restored services quickly.
Hospitals and emergency services relied on backup generators, though some emergency rooms reported delays. Cultural landmarks like Madrid’s Prado Museum closed temporarily. Authorities are investigating the cause, with theories ranging from technical failures to cyberattacks, but no official explanation has been confirmed.
