Cuba defends “One Health” approach at international conference
Cuba reiterated its dedication to the “One Health” paradigm during the opening of the V International Convention Cuba-Health 2025, held at Havana’s Convention Palace on April 21.
The event, titled “Science, Solidarity, and Human Commitment Facing Global Challenges,” was inaugurated by José Angel Portal Miranda, Cuba’s Minister of Public Health. He emphasized the need for integrated approaches to global health challenges that transcend geographical and sectoral boundaries. The conference gathered delegates from 88 countries, including 20 health ministers, underscoring its global significance.
Portal Miranda highlighted Cuba’s longstanding commitment to this approach since the 1959 Revolution, with a healthcare system rooted in prevention, community control, and environmental health. He pointed out that Cuba’s primary healthcare model, particularly the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, exemplifies “One Health” by linking clinical, social, and environmental health. Despite financial limitations and U.S. economic sanctions, Cuba boasts impressive health indicators, such as an infant mortality rate of 7.1 per 1,000 live births and a life expectancy of 77.8 years.
Cuba’s international medical cooperation, active since 1963, has sent over 605,000 professionals to 165 countries. Currently, 24,867 Cuban health workers are stationed in 56 nations, providing essential services even in the most remote areas. The minister denounced U.S. campaigns against Cuban medical programs and reaffirmed Cuba’s dedication to training professionals who defend life.
The convention also celebrated Cuba’s scientific achievements, including the development of three COVID-19 vaccines and advancements in biopharmaceuticals. The event underscored the urgency of adopting the “One Health” approach globally to ensure the well-being of all living beings.
In conclusion, Cuba remains committed to advancing global health through solidarity, science, and education, ensuring that dignity is built with actions rather than words.
